Massage Therapy can Relieve Depression Symptoms

If you’ve ever had a massage you know that massage is good for the body and spirit. It relieves stress and tension and leaves you feeling more relaxed and at peace. Therapeutic touch is just that, therapeutic on many levels. And science has shown that massage is therapeutic for depression sufferers:

A course of 17 studies involving 786 people conducted by Dr. Wen-Hsuan Hou of I-Shou University in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, who used massage and other alternative treatments showed that massage is “significantly effective” in the treatment of depression symptoms.

Another study conducted by Kira M. Weier, CNM, MSN, and Margaret W. Beal, CNM, PhD compared relaxation and massage on 32 teen mothers suffering from depression to determine the effects. Overall the participants showed improvement, but only the massage group had “significant decreases in depression scores”.

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, roughly 9.5 percent of the U.S. population is afflicted with a type of mood disorder (Major Depressive Disorder, Bipolar Disorder, Dysthymic Disorder.) Of the mood disorders, Major Depressive Disorder is number one cause of disability for people between the ages of 15 and 44. It affects 6.7 percent of Americans age 18 and over.

Massage doesn’t promise to be the miracle cure for depression, but it is a therapy that can be used in conjunction with counseling, diet, and other complimentary health techniques.

If you choose to use massage to treat depression, look for a caring, mature massage therapist that has some experience with energy work and embraces a philosophy of holistic health. Work with your MT to set up a series of massage sessions to reap maximum benefits. Massage has cumulative effects, the more you have it, the better it is for you.

High Fructose Corn Syrup Causes Tumors to Proliferate

A study conducted at the University of California Los Angeles and published in the journal Cancer Research showed that fructose was easily metabolized by cancer cells which caused the cells to proliferate.

This is significant! Take a look at most of the processed food labels and you'll see that High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) is listed in the ingredients. And don't be fooled by packaging that claims natural ingredients, I've seen HFCS in whole grain bread and other foods touted to be "healthy".

In the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition there are several studies that indicate that fructose contributes to obesity, insulin resistance and other maladies. And between 1970 and 1990 Americans consumed 1,000 percent more HFCS according to the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. I remember reading a Los Angeles Times news article when that finding was published, they also tracked the growing trend of obesity to the increased use of HFCS.

Step away from the fructose. There are other alternatives to using a sweetener that clearly does more harm than good. Take care of your health avoid HFCS.

Treating Arthritis Symptoms With Aromatherapy by: Buffy Hall, RN

Did you know that the word “arthritis” actually refers to over 100 different diseases affecting areas in and around joints of the body? Actually, arthritis also can also affect other parts of the body besides the joints. The skin, liver, heart and kidneys are all vulnerable to certain types of arthritis. It causes pain, loss of movement and joint swelling.

I have a intense and personal interest in this subject since I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis twenty two years ago. But to be honest, I consider myself far luckier than many arthritis sufferers. I am fairly mobile and reasonably energetic, have minimal joint deformity and swelling, and most days I experience no real pain at all. It is mostly due to a combination of my medication regimen and my aromatherapy, that I am in such good shape for someone with a chronic illness.

I haven’t always been this stable though. I’ve had several periods in my life where I was largely disabled. The RA led to the onset of fibromyalgia and I was forced to leave a career in nursing at age 33 because of the constant pain. The more I worked, the worse it got until it was finally impossible for me to work the long hours anymore.

Instead I made a choice to concentrate my energy levels on being a stay at home mom to my two small children. I quit work, the daily stress level dramatically lowered and I got better. Today my son and daughter are 17 and 20 and a triumph of what was the best decision that I ever made. You WAHMs and WAHDs know what I mean.

As an arthritic, I am not unique. I share the daily "What body part isn't working well today" experience with over 66 million people nationwide.

Common Types of Arthritis

Osteoarthritis - a degenerative joint disease that is the most prevalent form of arthritis.

Rheumatoid Arthritis - an autoimmune disease that is one of the most serious and disabling types, affecting mostly women.

Juvenile Arthritis - a general term for all types of arthritis, including rheumatoid and lupus, that occur in children.

Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (Lupus) - a serious disorder that can inflame and damage joints and other connective tissues.

For application directly to the skin however, essential oils should be blended with a carrier oil like almond, jojoba, apricot or even coconut oil to avoid skin irritation. Aromatherapy is a natural, safe and economical option to deal with the pain, stiffness, stress, anxiety and depression that often goes hand in hand with an arthritis diagnosis. Practical Aromatherapy: Anti-Viral Properties Of Essential Oils By: Misty Rae Cech

Antiviral Activity of Essential Oils

The body of evidence regarding the effectiveness of natural botanicals against a great variety of viruses is growing. Over twenty years ago, German scientists found extracts of more than 100 species of the Lamiaceae family to have antiviral effects. This discovery lead to and increase in the examination of essential oils in Europe for the treatment of viral infections.

Essential oils from many plant families have now been demonstrated to have antiviral properties. Interestingly, different plant families exhibit varying degrees of effectiveness depending on the virus strain. This is due to the particular molecular structures found in each type of oil, which penetrate physical entities to varying degrees (different tissues, cell walls, mucous membranes, etc). The effect on each virus strain depends also on the virus structure (enveloped, non-enveloped, molecular symmetry, etc.)

Certainly, one of the reasons for oils' effectiveness en vivo is their lipophillic character - essential oils are easily absorbed into mammalian tissues, where they may produce the greatest results. In fact, when studying the anti-viral effects of essential oils, researchers found that normal cells seemed to acquire a special resistance to viral penetration, though the mechanism for this effect is not yet known.

Melissa and the Herpes Virus

One of the Lamiaceae plants studied, Melissa (Melissa officinalis - also known as Lemon Balm), was shown particularly efficacious against the herpes virus (HSV). Doctor Dietrich Wabner, a professor at the Technical University of Munich, has even reported that a one-time application of Melissa oil led to a complete remission of HSV lesions. A cream medication for Herpes outbreaks, who's active ingredient is an extract of Melissa, is now sold in Germany under the name Lomaherpan. Use of Melissa essential oil itself may be just as effective - the oil can be applied directly to the lesions (or diluted to 10% in carrier if sensitivity is noted) to speed healing. Further occurrences can be prevented by applying oil to the area when sensations signal an eminent outbreak - repeating this protocol 3 or 4 times has been reported to cause total remission in some individuals.

Other essential oils found effective against the Herpes virus include bergamot, eucalyptus, lemongrass and tea tree. Related to HSV is Herpes Zoster or 'Shingles', another common virus-mediated skin condition. Application of a 50/50 blend of Ravensara essential oil and Tamanu nut oil has been found extremely effective for reducing symptoms by many people.

Antiviral Components of Oils

The list of essential oils exhibiting antiviral effects is extensive: Melissa (as above), tea tree, juniper, eucalyptus, thyme, palmarosa, lavender, rosemary, clove, laurel, cinnamon bark, anise, rose, lemongrass, geranium, neroli, bergamot, clary sage, and dill. The antiviral effect of an essential oil is due to particular components of the oil - some oils will work just as effectively on a particular infection as another, because they contain similar amounts of a certain component. The components of essential oils showing antiviral activity, and the oils in which they can be found, are as follows (from K. Schnaubelt, Ph.D. - Advanced Aromatherapy, p. 36):

Anethol - found in Anise
Alpha-Sabines - found in Tea Tree, Laurel, and other oils
Beta-Caryophyllene - found in Lavender, Rosemary, Thyme Linalool, and other oils
Carvone - found in Dill
Cinnamic aldehyde - found in Cinnamon Bark
Citral - found in Melissa, Lemongrass and other oils
Citronellol - found in Rose and Geranium
Eugenol - found in Clove
Gamma-Terpinene - Found in Juniper, Eucalyptus, Niaouli, Tea Tree and other oils
Linalol - found in Lavender and Neroli
Linalyl acetate - found in Clary Sage, Lavender, Bergamot and other oils

Limited In-Vivo Data

Good studies of application of these essential oils in cases of illness are difficult to come by, as infecting people with viruses in the laboratory to subsequently be treated with aromatics would be a difficult process at best. The oils and components above have mostly shown effectivenessin-vitro, though tests also indicate that the anti-viral effect should occur in-vivo as well. As with Melissa, it has been HSV that has been most thoroughly examined, because of the relative simplicity of doing so. But there is nothing particularly special about the herpes virus, and proper oil/pathogen paring should prove as effective.

There are some noted case studies by professional aromatherapists. Of importance in these studies is the oil/symptom relationship. Essential oils from plants of the Myrtaceae family - notably Eucalyptus Radiata and Tea Tree - and Ravensara (also high in Eucalyptol) seem to have helped in cases with respiratory symptoms. For the lower respiratory tract, Hyssop decumbens (from the same plant family as Melissa) has been of interest. Essential oils for such cases may be used either in a diffuser, being taken at regular intervals, or through massage, diluted in a carrier oil.


Because of the difficulty in many cases of illness in determining the exact virus type involved, more specific application cannot be given. Certainly, in cases of HSV, Melissa has been shown effective in a number of studies. For respiratory infections, Eucalyptus and Ravensara have been used with success, and can be safely used as an adjunct to regular medical care. These oils may support one's recovery on a physiologic level - essential oils also play a part in uplifting emotions, which may also speed healing, or at least improve mental outlook during the healing process. For such instances, one may simply find the essential oil or combination that one finds pleasant, calming, and/or uplifting.

PLEASE NOTE: In no cases, however, should self-treatment with essential oils be used in place of professional medical care where signs/symptoms of infectious illness are present.

What Is The Purpose Of Ayurveda By: Eric Cho

“Life science” is what Ayurveda means in Sanskrit. It is derived from the two words ‘Ayu’ meaning life and ‘Veda’ meaning knowledge or science. Ayurveda is not just a preventive health care system; it is a way of life that found its origins in ancient India 5,000 years ago.

According to this system, health is determined by three biological principles, called ‘Doshas’. The three ‘Doshas’ are Vata, Pitta and Kapha, each controlling movement, metabolism and structure.

The body, mind and spirit is free of disease when the ‘Doshas’ are in equilibrium. Disease strikes when there is an imbalance or disequilibrium in even one of these ‘Doshas’. Balance is the key. Improper diet, pollution, unhealthy habits are just some of the reasons that lead to an imbalance.

Ayurveda emphasizes the use of mind, body and spirit to prevent and fight diseases. Thus it strives to restore the innate harmony of the individual. The main thrust of Ayurveda is to synchronize and coordinate the various bodily functions by identifying the imbalance in the body. Ayurveda seeks to restore a person’s health by bringing him into equilibrium with his true self. Thus the aims of Ayurveda are:

What is Reiki Exactly?

On a recent episode of Rules of Engagement, the character Adam was giving his fiance', Jennifer, a massage. He started out with classic massage strokes, then announced that he read about another massage technique called Reiki then proceeded to pummel Jennifer's back with poking, prodding "strokes" causing her pain and distress.

I have to say, as a Reiki healer, it was disappointing to see Reiki (pronounced RAY-key) depicted in this erroneous manner. Reiki is NOT a massage technique. It does not hurt, require force or involve classic massage strokes. Reiki falls into the category of energy healing in that a Reiki practitioner channels energy into the client through their hands.

The word Reiki is broken down into two words: Rei = Spirit, ki = energy. Reiki is often times called Universal Life Energy. It is all around us and available to all. A Reiki practitioner is someone who has been 'attuned' by a Reiki Master/Teacher and is able to channel Reiki energy. There are three levels (four if you count the Master/Teacher level,) Reiki I, Reiki II and Reiki Master. The amount of Reiki a practitioner can channel increases with each attunement level and how clear the Reiki practitioner keeps themselves. Reiki practitioners are simply Reiki energy conduits.

Reiki is an effective, non-invasive healing modality in that it helps the client heal themselves on a physical, mental or spiritual level. Most clients feel a deep sense of calm and relaxation after a Reiki session. Others may have an emotional release which is needed to begin their healing process. Minor maladies such as headaches can disappear within one session.

A full Reiki session may last about one hour. Typically, the client will lay on a massage table while the practitioner places her hands on different parts of the client's body, usually following the the chakra points. A chakra balancing Reiki session can be as short as 15 minutes.

Level II and higher Reiki practitioners are able to do distance healing where they need not be present with the client to channel energy to them. If you opt for a distance healing, it is best to receive the energy when you are retiring to bed when you will be most receptive.

All This SEX is Making Me...

...healthy! Ok aside from all the obvious reasons we love and engage in sex (for the love and intimacy in case you thought that a trick question,) there are some very solid health benefits for engaging in sex:
  1. Exercise! Depending on how athletic you and your partner are, sex can be a great way to boost your heart rate and get that blood flowing! Sex also BURNS CALORIES!
  2. Immune booster - according to WebMD, when people have sex at least once a week, studies showed higher levels of " antibody called immunoglobulin A or IgA, which can protect you from getting colds and other infections. Scientists at Wilkes University in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., took samples of saliva, which contain IgA, from 112 college students who reported the frequency of sex they had."
  3. Lowers prostate cancer risk - Two studies, one published in the British Journal of Urology International observed that men who ejaculated a minimum of five times a week during their twenty's lowered their risk for prostate cancer by 33%. The second study, in the Journal of the American Medical Association it was noted that older men who ejaculate at minimum 21 times a month also were at lower risk for prostate cancer.
  4. Post menopausal women can maintain their pelvic floor muscles when they have sex more often, as well as keeping their vagina supple. If you experience vaginal dryness (which frequent sex can also help with,) then look for a water based lubricant. This really is a case of use it or lose it.
  5. Intimacy is increased, and that's always a good thing for increasing health and well being.

Here's another tip for improving your sex life: drink water. Strive to drink half your body weight in ounces. Seriously. Keeping your body properly hydrated will increase and help men maintain their erections, and women will benefit by being better lubricated.

Kangen Water - it really works

I know you've probably heard a lot of hype about Kangen water (also known as ionized water) promising to deliver all sorts of health benefits. So many benefits that it's a little hard to swallow (pun intended.) But I have to tell you about my experience with this water.

Three and half weeks ago, I answered an ad in my local paper placed by a holistic doctor who was looking for 10 people to do a study on. The ad asked that the candidates have one or more of the following: chronic pain, menopausal symptoms, diabetes, fatigue, arthritis etc. The ad said the medical exam and lab tests were free, and that the experimental "drug" was natural with no side effects.

"Ok," I thought, "I can go and check this out." I had a few of the symptoms listed, it wouldn't hurt to see what the doctor had to say. As it turned out, the doc prescribed a regiment of Kangen water set to a pH level of 9.5. I was to drink half my body weight in ounces daily. This amounted about a half gallon of water a day.

The doc set me up with gallon jugs of Kangen water and I refill the jugs when empty. I've been doing this for over three weeks and here are the real differences I've noticed:
  1. My lower back pain has all but diminished. (I've got disk degeneration between L4 and L5,)
  2. I have more energy.
  3. I had range of motion issues with my right shoulder which is not 100% better, but has significantly improved.
  4. I sleep better at night. One of my menopausal symptoms was waking in the middle of the night.
  5. My joints feel more fluid.
Lest you think that if I had drunk regular water in the same quantities I would get the same results, that could be true. Except I had been drinking about a half gallon of non-ionized water a day for a few months prior to the Kangen water experiment.

So in my non-scientific opinion: YES! Kangen water worked for me to relieve my some of my chronic health issues.

Hemorrhoid Pain Relief

The search for hemorrhoid pain relief is a high priority for sufferers. Some, who have severe hemorrhoid issues, will even go so far as to have laser surgery for hemorrhoids.

Whether your hemorrhoid condition is mild, severe or somewhere in between, here are a few hemorrhoid home treatments to try. Inexpensive and easy to apply, they're worth the effort if you are able to get hemorrhoid pain relief.

  • Blackstrap Molasses - It has to be Blackstrap molasses, not the regular or "robust" type of molasses. Take two teaspoons daily. Shrinkage of hemorrhoid is usually obtained within a couple weeks. (It has been reported that varicose veins have improved after continuing this treatment for a month.)
  • Shrink Hemorrhoids with White Vinegar and Salt - Bring to a boil one cup of white vinegar. Remove from heat and add 1/2 cup of sea salt. Mix well, dissolving salt. Are You Getting the Most Out of Your Massage?

Massage is wonderful for maintaining stress levels, improving skin tone, and improving overall health. But are you getting the most out of your massage? It's your money, your body and you should have a say in how your professional massage is going. In other words, you need to communicate with your massage therapist.

Here are some tips to consider when you're going in for your body massage:
  • Do fill out your client intake form truthfully. Old injuries, medications you're taking, and even allergies to nuts and/or flowers could be important information for your massage therapist. The better understanding your body worker has of your medical conditions, old and new, the better she can address your needs.
  • Do notify your therapist if there has been a change in your health history on subsequent visits.
  • Do communicate to your massage therapist the amount of pressure you like. Even if in the beginning you say you like DEEP tissue massage and halfway through the massage session you find that you cannot tolerate the pressure...tell her! A good therapist will adjust her pressure according to the client's preference.
  • Do remove your contact lenses prior to the massage, or if this is not possible, inform the massage therapist that you have them in.
  • Do be a few minutes early to your massage appointment to ensure that you get your full session time.
  • Do be specific about which areas you would like your body worker to spend extra time. You may be in for a full body massage, but you may need more work on your lower back. A good therapist will adjust her massage timing accordingly to accommodate your needs.
  • Do reschedule your massage appointment if you are ill!
Good communication with your body worker is key! Conversely, if you feel you're not being heard by your massage therapist, look for a new one. Bodywork is personal, you should be very comfortable with the quality of the service you receive and the rapport you have with your therapist to get the most out of your massage.
